[Date: October 10, 2020 11:03 AM.] [Tim stops by the library. Mia is there and has a few boxes of books that she's going through.] [There's a Mi-5 type in the back doing some reading that Tim doesn't recognize.] [Start] * Mai hasn't noticed Tim just yet. She's sorting the books into piles on the table. * Tim walks into the library with a paper tiger sitting on one shoulder and a plush hummingbird perched on another. In some other, sainer, branch this might be unusual and noteworth. He watches Mai sort books for a bit, and after glancing at the Mi-5 type, he clears his throat. "Hey Mai. Got a minute?" * Mai starts fairly automatically. "Bit busy--" She then process the voice and looks up. "Oh, sure." She looks oddly at the hummingbird. (She hasn't seen it yet, right?) (Probibly not, but if Jins been talking to her she'd know about Jenny.) (Okay, it stays) (Also she may have seen it when Katherine had it) (That's true, but it still works) (so, reply at your leisure) Good, I've got an interesting riddle for you. "What's faster than light and slower than sound?" * Mai thinks a minute. "I think I've read that before, but been a while." * Tim points at Jin. "Kurt according to him. So I wanted to know where he gets his information from because that doesn't make the least bit of sense to me." I guess I hadn't read it. * Jin looks sheepish. * Jenny looks smug. So I take it this describes Mr. Petros's powers somehow? ::She generates a SAB log book:: * Tim looks at the book and then nods. " Yeah, he actualy said, well wrote that Kurt moves faster than the eye can see, but slower than sound and that he doesn't teleport. Yes." (-yes) Well there's an old expression "the hand is quicker than the eye." Doesn't mean the hand can move anywhere near the speed of light, but speaks to the limits of our perception. Stage magicians, ninjas, and their ilk love to take advantage of that principle. * Tim nods. "Of course but that only works across short distances, a few inches for the best of the stage magicians that I've ever seen. That much motion across that much space just doesn't work." * Mai nods. "Right, but stage magicians don't have superhuman speed." She then pauses and thinks for half a second. "Well, there's been a few cases, but they were really wasting their efforts." (their efforts->their abilities) Mai? The speed of sound is mathmaticaly fixed at a certain number depending on the density of the material the wave is passing through... I can pick a bullet out of the air going twice that at sea level, trust me when I say Kurt wasn't moving at anywhere near that speed. But he was moving faster than an ordinary human? ::She looks through the logs:: And he does have the ability to turn invisible. * Tim thinks for a bit and then nods. "He was... but ... he'd have to turn invisable, run behind me, stop, turn around, turn visable, and then kick me in the head and miss in less time than it takes me to blink and that should be on the other side of the sound barrier." * Mai nods and puts down the logs. She then generates "The Physics of Mysticism and the Mysticism of Physics" and starts rapidly skimming. * Tim takes the time to look at the books she was sorting. [They all look recently bound and they cover a range of topics.] [There is one on Mystical Thieves of the early Twenty first century. * Tim picks it up, and, after a quick glance at Mai, checks the index for the Page of Swords, or his real name. * Mai nods with permission and then smiles in triumph. "If Jin's observations are correct. And I think they may be. What you have may be a mixed power. Short version is that it combines some advantages and some weaknesses of both techniques." She goes back to the log book. [The Page of Swords, not his real name, is covered. Gets the thefts right. Classifies him as an almost exclusively mystical ability dependent thief.] * Tim nods and closes the book, using a finger as a bookmark. "So it's partialy like teleporting? What's he do? Lower his or the airs density so the speed of sound is higher and he doesn't run into the barrier?" That could well be it. We'd have to have Victor run some tests to get the exact details. ::She hms for a moment:: You're looking for techniques to use against him, right? Well, sorta. Last time I saw you, you seemed pissed at Yvonne and if you're still angry about whatever it was she did, it wouldn't be fair for me to ask for your help. So, realy, all I'm after about him is clearing up my confusion. On the flipside of that, I do want enough information from you to be able to clear you from the making of that knife enchanted to kill her, if at all possible. * Mai sighs and sits down. "Not possible I'm afraid. It wasn't meant to kill her. Well, I didn't think it was but given that display at the end of the fight." She sighs. (fight...) * Tim sighs right back. "That's going to make things difficult. Could you tell me what you do know about it? Or at least how hard it'd be to get another one?" Well, first off Yvonne is vulnerable to holy weapons. That's not a surprise to you I'm sure. * Tim nods. "Yeah, I figured that much out on my own, you can't get all the powers of something without at least a few of the weaknesses." * Mai nods and frowns. "There tend to be other costs." She then shakes her head and continues talking. "What was made was a weapon that would only be holy towards Yvonne. Which is easier to produce than a normal holy weapon while being similarly dangerous." Session Time: Thu Mar 31 00:00:00 2005 * Tim scratches his chin. "So that means either you over did it with the targeting Yvonne, or she's just that vulnerable to holy items. I doubt it's the second one or something would have happened to her long before now." * Mai shakes her head. "No, that's the normal effect." She gives a fairly cold smile. "Your girlfriend is an easy woman to underestimate. She makes sure of that. She's managed to do a much better job of avoiding drawing the attention of hunters than I would have guessed." * Tim ponders and then shakes his head. "That makes sense untill you factor in her joining SAB, if there's anything that'll get the attention of people who can hurt supernaturals it's doing it professionaly." You're right. I should have said draw the ire. Organizations like SAB do protect their own. She's actually now staying on base and I have heard Ms. McLochlane has been talked down. For the past few centuries there's been groups that have been willing to overlook traditional opinions when an extra-planar is willing to join the team. * Mai then switches to a more genuine smile. "The good news is that it also likely means that she's avoided the excesses demonkind are known for. * Tim looks releaved. "That, at least, is good to hear. Even if the rest of it has been somewhat disturbing." Honestly I don't like her nor do I trust her. But yes, she's pragmatic and willing to do good. ::she then frowns again:: But really, you could do better. But I doubt you really want my opinion on the matter. * Tim shrugs. "Hey, if it helps me get what I want, I'll ask for it. You might even be right, but I'll take what I can get. Or I'll get what I can take. One of the two." * Mai chuckles and reclaims the thievery book. "Point is, there's now a select few who can fight Yvonne as if they had holy weapons." * Tim nods. "As long as they're all part of SAB, and she's part of SAB I won't have too much of a problem with that after the fighting’s over and until we get another Angel, but I guess there isn't anything I can do to stop them within the rules." He then glances over at the Mi-5 guy again. Sarah will protect her so long as she plays within the rules. And she's done that just fine up to now. But if something new comes up I'll be here. ::she follows Tim's glance:: Or we could talk somewhere more private. And if you care that much about her maybe there's more to her than I see. Someplace more private would be good, and there's more to life than just books, but I'd imagine you've got more than one good story about that. * Mai looks quite amused and stands up. She closes her eyes and focuses for a moment and the majority of the books fly out of there boxes and find spaces on the shelves. Mai then puts the remaining box in the (Arcane books to be sorted) secure bin. * Mai looks a bit tired as she does this. * Tim applauds quietly. "Niice." (Go golfclapping!) Tiring but works in a hurry. ::She looks to the Mi-5 guy:: Books are all secured. ::She then looks back to Tim:: Want to follow up now? * Tim thinks about that and then grins. "Howsabout we get you a cup of hot tea and then talk some more? I've got a few hours free." * Mai smiles at that. "Do you actually know how to make a good cup of tea?" Generaly I go to a tea house and give them far too much of other peoples money, so I'm going to have to say no. Care to learn? Hard as it may be to believe there is more to life than spending other people's money and enjoying one's time with one's girlfriend. * Tim mock gasps. "There is? No, I don't belive you. I demand that you show me proof of the outragious assertation!" * Mai laughs at that. "Follow me then and I will. I've got a kitchen in my flat." She then smiles. "And if you don't mind horribly could you send your bird off to play? I'd prefer not to be spied on by your aunt." * Jenny flies up at that and looks very miffed at Mai. * Jin just nonchalantly settles on Tim's shoulder. * Tim looks up at Jenny. "Sorry Jenny-bird, but I was going to do it anyway, you can tell her all about it after it's all over." * Jenny looks annoyed at Tim and then at Mai and then at Tim and then flies off to Tim's room. * Mai then leads you to the residential area of the SAB base. "I actually do have a budget to keep an apartment outside, but I use it for leasing when I'm doing work abroad." * Tim nods. "I'm just down here 'cause there's no real reason for me to get a real apartment. It might be a bit more spacious, but if I want a window I can just go outside." (This seems like a resonable place to pause since I'm trying to get to sleep earlier and I'm not sure how much longer this will take. ^^;) * Mai then leads Tim into her living room. [Pause!]
